2017 has been an incredible year for new music so it was only right that I highlighted a single artist who had created music that I’m still addicted to. However, I couldn’t cut it down to one so I present to you my two artists of 2017.
With inspiration from the likes of Lauryn Hill and Mos Def, Jorja has a soulful and jazzy style that is often compared to Amy Winehouse and FKA Twigs.
Jorja Smith was brought up in Walsall (near Birmingham, UK) where she was classically trained as a vocalist during her time at secondary school.
It wasn’t until January of last year when Jorja Smith uploaded her first release of ‘Blue Lights’ to SoundCloud at only 18 years old. It was from here that Drake caught her eye and chose her song ‘Where Did I Go?’ as his song of the moment as released in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Since then Jorja has succeeded in all areas. She came 4th in BBC’s 15 Sound of 2017 after being shortlisted. In March, Smith appeared twice on Drake’s album ‘More Life’ before being nominated in the Best Female category in the 2017 MOBO Awards.
Jorja Smith is a beautiful soul with such vocal talent which is on trend, using hip-hop as a way to attract new audiences. This has given her the chance to be played on Radio 1 and get her single ‘On My Mind’ in the UK top 40.
With such an edgy vibe, she’s not only a vocal talent but a style QUEEN. Jorja Smith gives me such a buzz and I cannot wait to hear more from her in 2018.
As a self-taught musician, Tash Sultana began busking in the streets of Melbourne, AUS to make a name for herself. Her success led to sell-out shows without promo and becoming a viral sensation just from creating and posting homemade YouTube videos.
Tash Sultana explores music by using over 10 instruments including trumpets, drums and saxophones just to name a few. The one-woman powerhouse is known for her talent with a loop pedal and incredible digital mixing.
In the last year Sultana has had 4 ARIA award nominations and she’s topped the iTunes chart in multiple countries. Her single ‘Jungle’ was number 3 in triple j’s hottest 100 last year allowing it to go PLATINUM (and being featured on FIFA 18). PLUS, Tash has had over 100 million streams worldwide.
To end the year Tash Sultana has three songs in the running for triple j’s (my all time favourite radio station even if it is in Australia) hottest 100 of 2017 and is preparing for a worldwide tour in 2018 where she’s COMING TO ENGLAND FOR ONE SHOW ONLY!
Peace and love,
